Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) has launched the MP3367, a step-up converter specifically designed for driving white LED arrays used as backlighting in small-to-mid-size LCD panels. This new device features six-channel current sources, with each channel capable of delivering a maximum current of 150 mA.
The MP3367 utilizes peak current mode as its pulse-width modulation (PWM) control architecture to regulate the boost converter. By applying six-channel current sources to the LED cathode, the device allows for precise adjustment of LED brightness. The current in each LED string can be regulated to a specific value set by an external current-setting resistor, ensuring a high degree of accuracy with a 2.5% current regulation tolerance between strings.
To achieve higher efficiency, the MP3367 incorporates a low on-resistance MOSFET and a low headroom voltage. Additionally, it is equipped with a standard I²C digital interface, making it easy to use and integrate into various systems. The switching frequency can be programmed using a resistor, the I²C interface, or an external clock.
The MP3367 offers multiple dimming modes, including analog, PWM, and mix dimming. In PWM dimming mode, a PWM input is utilized, while the dimming mode can be selected through the I²C interface or the MIX/AD pin. The device also features a phase shift function, which helps eliminate noise during PWM dimming.
To ensure the safe operation of the device, the MP3367 includes robust protection mechanisms. These protections include overcurrent protection (OCP), overvoltage protection (OVP), overtemperature protection (OTP), LED short protection, and LED open protection. Moreover, there is an option to automatically decrease the LED current at higher temperatures, preventing potential damage.
The MP3367 is available in two package options: QFN-24 with a size of 4 mm x 4 mm and TSSOP28-EP. These compact packages contribute to the device's versatility and suitability for various applications requiring reliable and efficient LCD backlighting.
